SCDSB Trustee Deni Among the First Cohort of Trustees to Successfully Complete OCSTA Course

In 2015 eight universities in Ontario collaborated with the Ontario Catholic School Trustee Association (OCSTA) to create the OCSTA Certificate Course in Leadership & Good Governance. This is a 12-week online course that is provincial in scope but also includes local Catholic issues specific to a trustee’s own regional district. The course provides a trustee with many benefits such as developing a greater understanding and appreciation of the history of Catholic education in Ontario along with a greater understanding of the role of Catholic social teaching in our modern society. The leadership lessons of Pope Francis are also explored in the course. Topics include youth engagement in Catholic education, the role of the trustee as a public advocate for Catholic education, our support for Ontario First Nations, Metis and Inuit education and an examination of trends in Catholic education throughout Canada and the rest of the world.

Sudbury Catholic Trustee, Nancy Deni took part in this program. As part of the program, trustees are required to work on a practicum project that ideally could benefit their school board. Deni chose to focus on the home-school-parish triad relationship and ways that this triad can be strengthened. As part of her project, she sought and received feedback from parents, principals, priests and laypersons in the Church as she feels very strongly that the strength of this relationship is the key to keeping Catholic education alive and well in Ontario.

“I feel very privileged to be amongst the first cohort of trustees to complete the program,” Deni stated. “It was an eye-opening experience and I recommend the course to all trustees who want to be strong advocates for Catholic education in this province. This course really strengthened my belief that a Catholic education provides students with a really special and unique educational experience. We really do educate the mind, the body and the spirit in our schools.”

St. Mark Learns About the Positive Impact of Going Green

Students at St. Mark Catholic Elementary School are learning about the positive impacts of going green. Through funding from the TD Friends of the Environment (TD FEF) grant, (sand table), the Metro Green Apple School Program (the soil/ plants/ seeds) and Freskiw farms (provided discount prices and gardening education and guidance), the students created posters and media presentations informing their audience about human impacts (positive and negative impacts such as littering and the importance of eating local). Students gave back to these three organizations by giving them a planted bean in a recycled bowl or in a decorated Tim Horton tin can with two pictures of them in front of their garden and new school yard apple trees; which read “Thank you! from St. Mark School” on the pictures.

Indigenous Celebration Held

The Diocesan Centre is planning an inclusive day of celebration based on indigenous culture, and would love a big turn out at this event. All students, staff, families and friends are welcome and encouraged to attend! It looks to be a great day planned!

c) 7 Grandfather teachings

d) Legends – Elders telling the stories~

e) Medicines and Wheel

f) Sacred Elements (fire keeper, tobacco, stones, feather, pipe, drums, smudge, animals) ~

11:00 am. Healing Circle – prayers, scripture (trilingual), blessing~

1:30 pm. Feast – “pot luck”

3:00 pm Travelling Song/Blessing~

There will be an information/registration night TODAY – Tuesday, February 5, 2013 for all parents interested in registering their child(ren) at one of the Sudbury Catholic elementary schools for FULL DAY Kindergarten beginning September, 2013.

Mayor for the Day at St. Mark

Grade 6 student Haley Cornthwaite chaired a mock Council meeting after being granted 8 hour Mayoral powers recently. Her classmates acted as members of the council, eagerly listening to facts surrounding the proposed road closures for the Santa Claus parade. To give them a helping hand, the students heard from Constable Petroski and home inspector. In addition to learning the municipal ropes, the students also had an opportunity to learn of the important work of city home inspector as well as a chance to pose questions to Constable concerning his job as as OPP officer. To cap off the morning, the students of St. Mark school closely inspected an emergency response vehicl as well as the pump truck at the Fire Station.

St. Mark Students Earn Top Prizes in Royal Canadian Legion Remembrance Day Contest

Students at St. Mark Catholic Elementary School participated in this year’s Royal Canadian Legion Remembrance Day Literary and Poster Contest. This contest heightens student awareness of the sacrifices made by our veterans in various conflicts including our present day involvement in Afghanistan.
Two St. Mary students – Mathieu Sisk and Tyler Kotanko both won prizes in this year’s contest. Tyler placed first in the Junior Essay as well as second in the colour poster and second in the black and white poster contests. Mathieu placed first in the primary colour poster and third in the black and white poster contests. Both Tyler’s essay and Mathieu’s poster will advance to the Zone competition for further judging.

St. Mark Catholic Elementary School Student Advances in Lions International Peace Poster Contest

Alyssa Kotanko. a grade 6 student at St- Mark Catholic Elementary School has taken the first step to becoming an internationally recognized artist by winning a local competition sponsored by the Warren & District Lions Club.

Alyssa’s poster was among more than 375,000 entries submitted worldwide in the 23rd annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest. Lions Clubs International is sponsoring the contest to emphasize the importance of world Peace to young people everywhere.

“Peace on earth and goodwill toward human kind”, the 11 years old from Markstay said. The posters were selected by the school’s administration for its originality, artistic merit and portrayal of the contest theme “Vision of Peace”. The judging was held at the end of October at the school.

Markstay & District Lions Club President, Lion Steven Olsen, said he was impressed by the expression and creativity of the students at St- Mark School. “It is obvious that these young people have strong ideas about what peace means to them. I’m so proud that we were able to provide them the opportunity to share their visions”

Kotanko’ s poster will advance to face stiff competition through the district, multiple and international rounds of competition if they are declared the international grand prize winner,” Lion Steven Olsen said.

One grand prize winner and 23 merit award winners will be selected. The grand prize includes a cash award of US$5,000, plus a trip for the winner and two family members to the awards ceremony at Lions Day with the United Nations. The 23 merit award winners will each receive a certificate and a cash award of US$500.

“Our club is cheering for Alyssa as her poster advance in the competition, and we hope that her vision will ultimately be shared with others around the world,” Lion Steven Oslen said.

Locally, Alyssa will be honoured for her participation by the Warren & District Lions Club on November 25th at their award recognition ceremony.

St. Mark Students Recognized by Royal Canadian Legion

Congratulations to the students of St Mark Catholic School in Markstay for their excellent efforts in the Royal Canadian Legion’s Remembrance Day Literary Contest.

Mr. Robitaille and Heidi from the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 76 presented the medals, certificates and prizes to the lucky winners on Wednesday, January 17, 2007.

The winners of the Remembrance Day Literary Contest of the Junior Essay, Grades 4, 5,& 6 were:

1st place – Lucreatia Frizell – won $ 25.00 and a gold medal

2nd place – Zachary Eden – won $15.00 and a silver medal

The winner of the Remembrance Day Literacy Contest of the Intermediate Poetry, Grade 7, 8 & 9 was;

3rd place – Mackenzie Vermette – won $10.00 and a bronze medal

The winner of the Remembrance Day Literacy Contest of the Intermediate Essay, Grades 7, 8,& 9 was;

3rd place – Jessica Daggett – won $10.00 and a bronze medal
